The Wives Of The Gods

Many people who are not aware of the Hindu concept of God are amazed at the wide number of Gods we have and many a times our Hindu brethren join them in mocking the very concept of God. If any of them take a sincere look at the principles behind the Gods, then their view is likely to change.

I will try to cover here the concept behind the wives of the principal Gods in the Hindu pantheon. In the Hindu system of Gods, there are 3 principle Gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara. Brahma is the Creator of life. Vishnu is the sustainer of life and Maheshwara is the destructor of life. Before someone questions why someone who destroys life can be a God, we should remember that destruction is only the other side of the coin of life. Unless something is destroyed, something new cannot arise. The egg as an entity dies to create the chick. The caterpillar as an entity dies to create the butterfly. So life in one form ends to generate life in another form.

Each of these Gods has wives. Brahma’s wife is Saraswathi. Vishnu’s wife is Lakshmi and Maheshwara’s wife is Shakti. Saraswathi is the Goddess of knowledge. Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth. Shakti is the Goddess of power. Now that we know what each of the Goddesses represent, let us try and understand their association with the respective Gods.

Brahma as mentioned is the God of creation. To create anything what is needed. One is of course the inspiration to create. The second and most critical is the knowledge to create. So Brahma needs the knowledge to create life. Hence his wife is Saraswathi, the Goddess of knowledge.

Vishnu as mentioned is the God of sustenance. To sustain life, He needs the means for the same. Just as we need money to sustain our day to day lives, Vishnu needs wealth to sustain creation. Hence his wife is Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth.

Maheshwara as mentioned is the God of destruction. To destroy anything that is constructed, the need is for power or energy. Hence his wife is Shakti, the Goddess of power.
