Angels in my professional life

I had mentioned in one of my earlier blogs about having an
attitude of gratitude in life. I am taking the opportunity to list all the
angels in my professional life who came exactly at the right time and helped
put me on the type of professional success that I had hoped for. I am not using
actual names to protect the privacy of people. But I am sure readers will see
how suddenly angels came into my life.

Way back in India I used to work for a IT training company
in Hyderabad, which was still in its infancy those days, but is now a global
leader. Being an extremely small company meant phenomenal pressure every day. I
survived this for about an year and then I realized things were getting
unbearable. At one point I had major disagreement with my boss who told me to
either accept what he was telling or put in my papers. I had too much hot blood
in me those days and decided to put in my papers. My child had just been born
and India was not the booming IT country that it currently is. Jobs were there,
but not as plentiful as now. I resigned and I was walking back home when I
accidentally met one of my seniors from IIM. We exchanged pleasantries and then
I casually mentioned what happened. He told me to give me his resume and he would
see what could be done. There were no email based resume delivery those days
and we did not even have access to good printers to print resumes. (MS Word did
not even exist!!!). I wrote out my resume and next day handed it over to him.
Within couple of days, I got a call and after the first meeting, I got an
offer, which was 30% higher than what I was getting. So a chance meeting with
this IIM senior, whose name starts with D, suddenly changed my life. What was
the reason for this senior to be on the road at the same time that I was? Is it
pure chance or an angel sent by the unseen powerful universal power? Without
hesitation, I declare Mr. D, my first professional angel.

Many years later I was working in Bangalore for an IT
company, which was part of a large industrial group. Things were going great
because I had a great boss, Mr S. Within 6 months of joining I got a promotion.
Major newspapers including Times Of India, Economic Times etc, interviewed me.
I seemed to be on top of my professional career when a member of the industrial
family replaced my boss. Things rapidly deteriorated after that and my life
became hell. This is another reminder in retrospective that name/fame/power etc
are temporary and life always has its ups and downs. Again I survived this for
about an year till it became impossible. I approached the same boss who by then
had joined a multi-national company. He passed on my resume to another group,
which had a potential opening. As expected, I got an interview call with a
manager whose name I shall say as Mr. G. When I went into the room for the
interview, my ex-boss was also in the room. He welcomed me and told the hiring
manager that he knows me very well and highly recommends me and walked out. The
hiring manager looked at me and said, “When Mr. S has recommended you so
strongly, I have nothing more to verify.”. He asked me a few cursory questions
and soon I had an offer. I had become the youngest business manager in the
company and my joining was an international announcement since I had joined as
the country manager. Mr. S is my second angel.

Later during the Y2K boom, I made decision to move to USA
with a consulting firm. With very little access to the Internet and with almost
no knowledge of the business environment here, I landed here almost
blindfolded. It became evident that this was going nowhere. The company decided
to move all of us who had come from India back to India and they told me this
around January. I shuddered thinking what my little daughter would go through
since the school systems were so different. I was on a H1 visa, which is
useless for a quick move and legally dangerous since one had to leave the
country at short notice. I met a gentleman called D, who had just started a
company. I told him what was happening. He told me not to worry and immediately
filed for my H1 transfer and offered me a job. All this happened in less than a
week and my previous manager was stumped that I found something so fast. Of the
4 people who had come from India, only I remained here, thanks to this angel.
Mr. D is my third angel.

In D’s company, we created a portal, which was immensely
praised. I was interviewed by Little India, the most popular magazine in USA
for the Indian community. Even India Today said that this portal was among the
best portals. I was basking in all that glory, when this company like all other
dot com companies began to have cash problems. I was wondering what next. Just
as luck would have it, my ex-boss in the multi-national company in India came
to NJ as the head of another consulting firm. We met and he saw what my
situation was. One day he called me to his office telling that he needed help
with a portal discussion with one of his clients. At the end of the discussion,
he told the client that in future, I would be talking to them since I was
joining them!!! This gentleman, Mr S had not even discussed this with me, but
told the client that I am joining him. I got a 30% hike in salary and stayed in
this company where I even got my green card. Now what power could have enabled
my ex-boss who was a top executive in Singapore for one of the world’s largest
IT companies to choose to join a much smaller IT firm in USA just around the
time I was looking for a job. Is this pure coincidence? I don’t think so. The
merciful universe had sent an angel. Mr. S is my fourth angel.

After I got my green card, I started working as a consultant
in a mortgage firm. Things were going well, till one fine day, they decided to
end the contracts of all people. I was in a pensive mood, when one of the
consultants who also was let go came to me and told me to try for a position at
another company, which was a subsidiary of a giant Fortune 500 company. I
barely knew this consultant and had never heard of the company he mentioned.
But all the same, I decided to apply and voila, I got a call. After the
interview I got the job offer, the first Indian to be hired at such a level in
that location. I got a cool 30% hike in salary. I unfortunately forget the name
of this consultant who introduced me to this company. I performed very well and
would rate my stay there as among my best. Now, what earthly explanation can be
there for this consultant to come and tell me to apply for a job in a company I
had never heard of? There was a protecting universal power, which sent him at
the right time with the right message. This gentleman is my fifth angel.

The mortgage industry downturn took its toll on several jobs
including mine. I started applying earnestly for jobs. But the recession had
just begun and I was not getting a great response. It so happened that my wife
used to go for music classes and she had a friend who worked in a IT product
company. This friend, Miss S had once come home and we were talking and she
suggested that I could look at her company. I went to the website and as though
ordained by some supreme power, I saw a position suiting my capabilities. I
told Miss S about it and sent her my resume. She forwarded it to the hiring
manager and since my resume had come as a referral, it moved with utmost speed
and soon I got a job with a double-digit increase. What was it that made me
talk to this lady? Why had the particular position opened up exactly when I
needed it? Is it just a coincidence? I rate this lady as my sixth angel.

In all these illustrations, the angels appeared almost out
of thin air. It was as though the universe knew that I needed help and sent
these angels just at the right time. My belief in the absolute kindness of the
Universal power has only grown much stronger. My gratitude for this universal
power, which I could see through its angels, has grown stronger. I feel blessed
that these angels have visited me.

  1. A great write up Shashank. I have had similar experiences in you and your wife. You both are absolute gems, you have helped me and my daughter and gave us so much hospitality when we needed it most. So what goes around comes around. I am not at all surprised by the angels in your life.
