The Three D’s of ethical behavior.

Once it so happened that the celestial Gods, The Demons and
the earthly beings were in a quandary as to what they should do to be peaceful.
They tried to reason it out amongst themselves and having failed to get a good
answer, decided to approach the Father or the Creator, BrahmaJi for an answer.

So the Gods first went to Brahmaji and asked him what they
should do to be peaceful. Brahmaji looked at them and said, “Da”.  Next, the humans went to Brahmaji and asked
what they should do to be peaceful. Brahmaji looked at them and said,
“Da”.  Finally, the demons went to
Brahmaji and asked what they should do to be peaceful. Brahmaji looked at them
and said, “Da”.

It is interesting how Brahmaji used the same word Da to
indicate what the three categories of creation should do to attain peace.

In the first category are the celestial Gods. They have an
abundance of everything. They get whatever they want and can fully enjoy the
materialistic objects. They live in a wonderful world of perennial youth and
beauty. Still, why is there turmoil amongst them and why are they not peaceful?
For one, the position of Godhood is not permanent. It is a transient position
acquired due to past actions. After the good effects wear off, the position of
Godhood is gone. So in this circumstance what should they do? As Brahmaji
suggests, they should do “Da” or “Dama”. Dama means self-control. In spite of
having the ability to fulfill any desires, Brahmaji urges them to have
Self-control because the more the consumption of objects of desire, newer ones
are generated and to fulfill them, there have to be multiple births. So the
only way to get out of this cycle for celestial beings is Dama or self-control.

Next, if we look at human beings, the tendency is to acquire
and accumulate. We want more and more objects to fill the void in our lives
because of a wrong assumption that the void can be filled by material objects.
We tend to think that once we acquire the next million, the next BMW etc, we
will be happy and we keep on acquiring and accumulating. Even though we acquire
and accumulate objects, we are still not peaceful. The solution is radical and
that is to stop acquiring or accumulating and instead start giving off our
excess accumulation to benefit others. This is the second Da told by Brahmaji
or it is “Dana”, which is charity. So, for humans, Dana is suggested as a means
for peace.

The tendency of the demons is wickedness and cruelty. They
tend to harm or hurt others and derive a sadistic pleasure when others suffer.
In a typical karmic reaction, the harm caused by the demons will come back to
haunt them in future births when they become the objects of hurt/cruelty rather
being the subject who was wicked. So, the only solution for them is the third
Da, which is Daya or kindness. For the demons, the suggested way to peace is
Daya.

Now, celestial gods, demons and humans are shown separately.
But if we analyze ourselves, we have all the three tendencies. So for us the
solution for peace is to practice each of the Da’s:

  • Dama
         or self-restraint
  • Dana
         or charity
  • Daya
         or kindness
